Celebrating her 90th year, philanthropist and former Editor in Chief of Brides Magazine, Barbara Tober, was honored at a spectacular event held at The Metropolitan Opera. This occasion marked the ultimate reunion of her core editorial team from Brides Magazine, where Barbara reigned as Editor in Chief for an impressive 30 years during the magazine’s heyday.
Barbara’s tenure at Brides began in the mid-60s, a time when marriage was falling out of fashion amidst the women’s liberation movement, the Vietnam War, and the advent of the pill. Despite these societal shifts, Barbara skillfully adapted the magazine to the changing times until she stepped down in the mid-90s. Her dynamic leadership and vision have been a source of inspiration, demonstrating boundless energy, intellect, and impeccable style.
Since leaving Brides, Barbara has continued to make a significant impact through her philanthropic efforts. One notable contribution is the dedication of the seven chandeliers in the lobby of The Met Opera to her late husband, Donald Tober.
The celebration of Barbara’s milestone year was nothing short of epic. Dinner was served among the scenic opera’s stage, with glamorous guests enjoying the majestic views of the theater. The evening was enriched by performances from Met stars, offering a perfect blend of music, memories, and a reason to dress up in elegant attire, for me courtesy of Amsale.
Most of the editors who served under Barbara remained at Brides for many years after her departure, with her protégé Millie Bratten succeeding her as Editor in Chief. The gathering of former editors—Millie Bratten, Phyllis Cox, Sally Kilbridge, Alecia Mayrock, Donna Ferrari, Maria McBride, Denise O’Donoghue, and Vicky Hyman—felt like a family reunion, celebrating not only Barbara’s remarkable career but also the enduring bond she fostered among her team.
Barbara looked stunning in her Valentino dress, basking in the glory of the event. The evening was a testament to her lasting legacy and the profound impact she has had on those around her. We are all immensely proud of Barbara and grateful for the inspiration she continues to provide.
