Some people in this world have that special something. It’s a twinkle in their eye, a mischievous grin and a warmth that makes the people around them feel extra special. Judd Waddell, the famed bridal designer and one of my dearest friends, had this magical touch and the world became a little less brighter when he passed away this week from a private battle with colon cancer.
Judd, a fine arts major from Washington University in St. Louis, found that his love of clean lines and beautiful artwork best translated to the bridal industry. He worked at some of the industry’s top design houses including Galina and Jim Hjelm before starting his own couture bridal line, Judd Waddell. Judd’s gowns were timeless, effortless and classic. Brides flocked to our store, Bridals by Lori in Atlanta, Ga., when Judd made a special appearance. He treated each bride as if she were his own sister and each customer received a beautiful sketch. A few years ago, Judd decided to forego his business and soon after became an integral part of the Carolina Herrera team. He loved this new chapter, and Judd worked for Herrera until his illness forced him to retire.
Judd befriended many in the bridal industry throughout his career and also amassed a loyal following of fans. Judd appeared on Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta many times and designed several gowns for Lori’s daughter and daughter-in-law’s weddings. Most of all, he was a warm, thoughtful and caring person. For my birthday each year, he would surprise me with a black dress he had made for me to wear to work, each one more beautiful than the last.
In his later days, Judd loved returning to his childhood home in Illiopolis, Illinois. He took on the project of renovating his family home there. During this exciting endeavor, Judd was able to apply his love of architecture, fine arts and interior design. While back at home, Judd also enjoyed spending time with one of his dearest longtime friends from his hometown, who was more like family, Kathy Etherton. Kathy was an integral part of Judd’s care during his illness.
Throughout his two year battle with cancer, Judd kept his wit and charisma. Despite having lost the love of his life and life partner, Steve Ferre, both parents, and beloved dog Petey, Judd forged ahead with treatments while studying the latest interior design trends, gossiping about The Crown, discussing the latest in the bridal industry, and giving me all the reasons why I deserved a new handbag from Bergdorf Goodman. Everyone deserves a best friend like Judd Waddell.
Memorial services will be held in New York and Illinois at a future date. To all of our friends in the bridal industry, may you never take a single moment with those you love for granted. Cheers, Judd, to a life well lived.
