Spring 2020: Hair + Makeup We Loved

AS REPORTED BY DANA WOOD, BEAUTY DIRECTOR

While the season skewed eclectic on the fashion front, the beauty looks were mostly just a whole lot of pretty and ultimately, isn’t that what every bride wants?

MARCHESA:

The Look: Tawny Cheeks Meet Tousled Tresses at Marchesa

Why We Loved It: Maybe it was the shift from NYC to Barcelona this season that drove the refined riff on outdoorsy beauty that Team Marchesa was serving up. Accessorizing with orchids only heightened the “natural but better” hair and makeup. It was ethereal and romantic, in an English moors-y way.

Ines Di Santo:

The Look: High & Mighty – With An Edge at Ines di Santo

The Pros Behind It: Hiro + Mari

Why We Loved It: So much going on here, and so much to love. As if the elaborately swooped and knotted updos weren’t compelling enough, cool-kid hairstylists Hiro + Mari added asymmetric bangs and the trend dujour: loose tendrils. What else would you expect from the Japan-bred, Brooklyn-based “fashion hair duo”?

MORILEE BY MADELINE GARDNER

The Look: Peachy & Beachy at Morilee by Madeline Gardner

The Pro Behind It: Craig Honeycutt for Utopia NYC and Liz Rhodes for Spoke & Weal and Dyson Hair

Why We Loved It: While makeup artist Craig Honeycutt went all-in for ladylike peach tones on the lips, cheeks and eyes, hairstylist Liz Rhodes opted for more of a laid-back, beach waves vibe. Simply beautiful.

THEIA:

The Look: Texture for Days at Theia

The Pro Behind It: Linh Nguyen

Why We Loved It: When a Studio 54-era Bianca Jagger and Farrah Fawcett-Majors are serving as inspo, “statement” hair is on the docket. These soft, bouncy curls are just flat-out beautiful.

ELISABETTA POLIGNANO:

The Look: Neon Yellow Lids & Feathery Topknots at Elisabetta Polignano

The Pro Behind It: Simone Belli and La Compagnia Della Bellezza

Why We Loved It: In a major nod to the 80s, neon makeup is having a moment. Makeup artist Simone Belli somehow managed to make bright yellow shadow the perfect complement to cherry pink lips and La Compagnia Della Bellezza’s wispy-wonderful topknots.

BERTA:

The Look: Liner In Flight at Berta

The Pro Behind It: Charlie Riddle for Stila Cosmetics

Why We Loved It: It takes some serious eye drama to compete with the massive pearl hoops Berta’s brides sported, and makeup artist Charlie Riddle brought it in spades. On a base of gradient pink and taupe shadows, he added a bold, flirty winged liner in jet black. Pop!
