OSCARS 2018 Beauty: The Sexy Seven

AS REPORTED BY DANA WOOD, BEAUTY DIRECTOR

There were a lot of fun, frisky looks on the red carpet on Sunday night, and the fact that even the fiercest advocates for #MeToo have moved on from the edict to wear black paved the way for a rainbow of stunning frocks, as well as lots of wedding-worthy white. That sometimes festive, sometimes ethereal vibe found its way to hair and makeup, too. And while there was plenty to swoon over, these seven women really stood out.

LAURA DERN: My, my, what a stellar year Laura “Big Little Lies” Dern is having! To celebrate, she’s been knocking it out of the park, red carpet-wise, this entire awards season. With a long, lanky bod like hers, clothes just naturally incredible. At the Oscars, I loved the way her lush, side-parted locks softened the crisp lines of her Calvin Klein By Appointment column gown. She looked relaxed and happy. Or, as the French say, “bien dans sa peau.”

JANE FONDA: On a night when several older women seriously brought it (OMG, can we please discuss how unspeakably beautiful 94-year-old Eva Marie Saint is???), Fonda really nailed timeless, womanly glamour. High-volume hair that didn’t look helmet-y, nude makeup that didn’t wash her out. We’ll have what she’s having.

TARAJI P. HENSON: You know that old saw about choosing your lips or your eyes to emphasize – never both? Happily, Taraji P. Henson didn’t get that memo. Her glistening lavender lids were equal in wattage to her purple (yup, purple) lips, and she looked fantastic. So much for rules.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE: While I felt her eye makeup was a tad excessive, especially since it was paired with a really bold lip (oops, I’m already getting rules-y again!), I can see a lot of brides wanting to emulate JLaw’s center-parted waves. Especially if you’re getting hitched at the beach. What could be easier than letting nature – and humidity – take its course?

LUPITA NYONG’O: Talk about a golden girl – the Black Panther star was literally glistening from head to toe. But the real standout were the shimmering threads woven into her braided updo by hairstylist Vernon François. #stealthislook

EMMA STONE: A redhead in red – you gotta give Stone props for pushing the fashion envelope. And the monochrome pinky peach lips, cheeks and eyes added another layer of texture and dimension. In a word? Stunning.

ZENDAYA: Because this list is in alphabetical order, Zendaya is dead last. But in my opinion, in terms of both her hair and makeup and her off-the-hook chic, single-shoulder Giambattista Valli gown, the 21-year-old multi-hyphenate pretty much blew everyone else out of the water. Thanks to the handiwork of Sheika Daley for Charlotte TilburyBeauty, and a new product called Hollywood Flawless Filter (note to self: get some of this, pronto), her complexion was perfection. Does it help that she’s so young and sprightly? Of course it does. But that level of polish is really only coaxed out by high-caliber hair and makeup talent. You know - the kind you want to hire for your wedding.
